12 Foot Catboat

12 Foot Catboat
Designed by Edson Schock - Circa 1940's

Follow me as I build a 12 foot catboat from plywood and pine. The boat was designed by Edson Schock in the 1940's. This is a project born of a desire to have another boat to sail here in Puerto Rico that will stand-up to the Trade winds. The sail plan will be changed to a gaff rigged sail. All the lumber is locally bought and pine will be substituted for oak, which is not readily available here. Marine plywood will be used.

Full size drawing of the side

Halted the gusset making to complete a full size side drawing in the boat. It is a reference to see how the boat looks on paper, get angles for some special parts and just get a look at the "big picture".

After drawing a waterline (the designer bases all measurements off the waterline), I measured and located each frame position. Then I marked where the deck landed, the bottom of the sides and the keel.

I then took a long strip of wood called a batten and used it as a guide for my pencil to connect the dots together.

Drawing the deck line.

The bottom of the side.

Finally the keel line.

All this will help give me angles and a way of double checking against the actual boat, when I begin to put everything together.
